What are yerba mate's health benefits?

What is Yerba Mate?

Yerba Mate (pronounced yehrba-mah-te) is a nutrient dense herb that grows in South America.  The leaves of the plant, are picked and dried to brew into a tea by the same name, Yerba Mate, or more commonly referred to as just “mate.”

The indigenous Indians of the region first chewed the leaves of the yerba mate plant. They realized that the leaves were beneficial for gut issues as well as a stimulant.  After time, they learned to make an infusion or tea from the leaves. Once the cowboys, or South American Gauchos, caught wind of the “magical” plant, they too started using the leaves and making infusions with it.  It was quite beneficial to the Gauchos who needed to stay up nights to watch over their herds, and get relief from the constipation that came from eating the cow meat. The drink quickly spread out into the cities and the rest is history!

Yerba Mate Weight Loss- - The Yerba Diet

Since Yerba Mate has such a high concentration of Chlorogenic Acid, it’s able to be highly effective at promoting weight loss because fat metabolism is enhanced.  Our "Skinny" blend specifically deals with this.  Yerba Mate also contains Saponins and Caffeoylquinic acids which are mineral rich, have amino acids and antioxidants that also help with weight loss. The bitter flavor also supports craving reduction (cravings for sweets as well as cravings for fried and salty).  Yerba mate has helped many reduce their appetites and we know this happens because of all the nutrients in the tea infusion.  It also might help with appetite as it is a "mood lifter" as well as an "energy lifter."

Yerba Mate Benefits

Yerba Mate Tea has been shown to be good at reducing and attacking cancer cells, destroying bacteria, promoting heart health, helping to lower blood pressure as well as cholesterol and also helps with blood sugar regulation. Yerba Mate also contains Saponins and Caffeoylquinic acids which are mineral rich, have amino acids and antioxidants that help with inflammation. (We have a "Detox" blend that deals specifically with inflammation)  It also increases well being and happiness by the source of natural energy with the aid of caffeine (theobromine, and theophylline) Lastly, Yerba Mate has a powerful adaptogen. An adaptogen is an herb that grows in an extreme condition and adapts to their environment and still thrives. Recently, scientists have learned that these plants with the strong power of “adapting” were also good for the human bodies that consumed them. They have a normalizing effect on the body. Using an adaptogenic herb helps a body adapt to stressors such as physiological, chemical, work, toxins, etc. Adaptogens have high levels of antioxidants and saponins, which defended the plant against disease and made them resistant to insects.

How to Make Yerba Mate.

Heating and Sweetening Water

Use filtered water.  Heat until water steams, but does not boil.  Any water that is too hot will “wash” the tea leaves and make for a very weak tea after a few servings.  Pour water into a pitcher or thermos that allows for a “narrow stream” to pour out.

If you have decided to sweeten the water, add your stevia or other product to the thermos.

Filling the Mate

Fill the mate with yerba about ¾ of the way full.  Put your palm over the opening and shake so that the leaves mix with powder.  Turn the mate right side up.

Adding Water to the mate

Add a little water to one side of the tea.  Once that is done, push the bombilla through.  The bottom of the bombilla should touch the bottom of the mate cup.

Add water to the rim of the mate, sip through the straw and enjoy.  If it needs a bit of sweetener, add more.

Mate Gourd Cup Directions.

Our mates are handmade by artisans in Argentina.

Curing the Mate Gourd

If you have a mate with a wooden or glass interior (we have some nice ones click here!) skip this step.  If you want a gourd, order our different colored mate gourds here.

Curing the mate just means that you seal the inside of the gourd.  There are many ways to do this.  The easiest is to fill the gourd with Yerba Mate or ground coffee, fill with water and let sit for 24 hours.  You are ready to go!!

To Clean

With a small spoon or your finger, scoop out all the tea.  Rinse well and set to dry.
